Karnataka Farmers' Protest Postponed Due to Cyclonic Weather; New Date to Be Announced
The Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS) and Hasiru Sene, founded by farmer leader Prof. Nanjundaswamy, had initially planned a massive protest on December 12, 2024, at the Taluk Office in Bagepalli, Chikkaballapur district. However, due to the adverse effects of the ongoing cyclonic weather, the protest has been postponed.
Speaking on the matter, HN Govinda Reddy, District President of KRRS, stated, "The decision to postpone the protest was made in consideration of the safety of our farmers and the challenges posed by the heavy rains. Once the cyclonic impact subsides, we will consult with the farmers and organizational leaders to finalize a new date."
The protest aims to draw attention to the long-standing demands of Karnataka's farmers, including water allocation, agricultural reforms, and relief from financial burdens. The movement addresses critical issues like:
- Diverting KC Valley and Krishna River water to rejuvenate lakes in Chikkaballapur and Kolar.
- Implementing laws to ensure minimum support prices for crops.
- Establishing agriculture-based industries in rural areas.
- Halting the misuse of the SARFAESI Act for land seizures.
T Ravi Nayak, Vice President of KRRS, commented, "This delay is temporary. Our fight for justice continues unabated. We urge all farmers to stay united and prepared for the upcoming demonstration."
Farmers across Karnataka remain committed to the cause and have pledged widespread participation once the protest is rescheduled. This delay highlights their resilience and determination to fight for their rights, regardless of the challenges posed by nature.
