Bengaluru 26 November: Farmers under the banner of Kisan Samyukta Morcha (non-political) staged a silent protest at Freedom Park, demanding urgent action on their long-standing issues. A memorandum highlighting their demands was submitted to authorities, with a fervent appeal to the President of India to press the central government for swift resolution.

The protest coincides with a hunger strike led by national farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dalewala, who began an indefinite fast at the Kanori Border, Haryana. Dalewala, a prominent face of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha, is advocating for the implementation of the Minimum Support Price (MSP) Guarantee Act as per the recommendations of Dr. M.S. Swaminathan. His other demands include a complete waiver of farm loans, reforms in the Fasal Bima Yojana (Crop Insurance Policy), and the introduction of a pension scheme for farmers over 60 years of age.

In solidarity with Dalewala’s hunger strike, the Morcha organized a peaceful sit-in at Freedom Park. Protesters condemned the central government’s apathy toward the plight of farmers, accusing it of neglecting key issues despite a 10-month-long struggle. Speaking to the media, farmer leaders stressed the importance of enabling farmers to focus on agricultural activities without undue stress.

“We urge the President of India to take our memorandum seriously and instruct the central government to resolve these issues. If the negligence continues, we will be forced to escalate our protests nationwide,” said a representative of the Morcha.

Meanwhile, in Delhi, farmer leaders from Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh staged a protest in front of the Ambedkar statue near Andhra Bhavan, condemning Dalewala’s arrest. The farmer leader was detained at 2 a.m. by Haryana Police at the Kanori Border, an act protesters described as a “massacre of democracy.”

Kurubur Shanthakumar, South India Coordinator of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha, slammed the central government’s attempt to suppress the farmers’ movement. “Dalewala’s arrest while he was preparing to fight for farmers’ rights through peaceful means is undemocratic and condemnable. This shows the government’s disregard for constitutional values, even as it celebrates Constitution Day,” Shanthakumar remarked.

Constitution Day Protest Highlights Farmers’ Plight

The protests coincided with Constitution Day, with farmers criticizing the government for celebrating democratic values while stifling dissent. The arrest, according to leaders, reflects the government’s intent to suppress movements seeking justice for the agricultural community.

The Morcha also pointed to the Supreme Court’s committee report, which recommended the MSP Guarantee Law to address the farmers’ crisis and prevent suicides. However, they accused the central government of ignoring the report and instead targeting farmer leaders.
